Tensions Rise Along Assam-Arunachal Border Amid Protests and Clashes

Tensions along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border escalated recently as protests intensified, leading to clashes between local groups from both states. The unrest was sparked by an incident on Monday in which 11 indigenous individuals from Assam were reportedly injured due to gunfire.

In response to the violence, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out to Arunachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Pema Khandu, requesting an investigation into the shooting and calling for accountability for those responsible. He has urged for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

The protests included the blocking of significant entry points along the inter-state border, with demonstrators obstructing roads at several locations. Key sites affected included Dwarmukh-Banderdewa, Ruksin, Silapathar in Dhemaji, and others across neighboring districts, disrupting normal life in the area.

Local authorities responded to the situation by using non-lethal measures, reportedly firing into the air to disperse the gathering crowds. The ongoing economic blockade against Itanagar reflects the growing unrest and demands from local groups in Assam.
