Thousands protest against housing costs across Portuguese cities
Housing demonstrations drew thousands of people to Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Braga and Faro on Saturday, ending with police intervention after midnight.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets on Saturday to demonstrate against housing costs in several Portuguese cities. The largest gatherings were recorded in Lisbon and Porto, though protests also occurred in Coimbra, Braga and Faro. In Lisbon, the demonstration crossed Avenida da Liberdade, led by a banner calling for a general strike on housing. Several politicians attended the demonstrations in Lisbon.
After dawn, the PSP advanced on protesters in both cities. In Lisbon, police dispersed demonstrators and removed tents that had been set up at Rossio. In Porto, the PSP had previously stated that intervention could occur if the encampment remained, warning that protesters could stay overnight at Praça D. João I only if they dismantled the tents.

After one in the morning, tensions escalated with reinforced police deployments. Police proceeded to destroy tents in Porto, prompting protesters to shout "we will return". Reports noted criticism of police repression during the protests.
According to Observador, similar protests took place in France, where more than 130 people were detained during housing demonstrations.
