On Saturday, October 10, the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) conducted a recount of the votes from the gubernatorial election in the state. This procedure was necessary after the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) annulled 274,411 votes cast for Anthony Garotinho due to the rejection of his candidacy registration.

With the exclusion of these votes, Douglas Ruas' (PL) percentage increased from 49.27% to 50.88%, securing his victory in the first round. The TRE-RJ officially announced the results, confirming that Ruas received the majority of valid votes, surpassing Eduardo Paes (PSD), who obtained 44.16%.

During the recount session, which lasted about ten minutes, Judge Cláudio de Mello Tavares, president of the TRE, announced the official result. The confirmation of the victory allowed Ruas to be immediately recognized as the elected governor of Rio de Janeiro.

Douglas Ruas, 37, is a civil police officer and lawyer, who has previously served as the president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj). He was declared elected after the conclusion of the first round of elections, which took place in accordance with the legal parameters established by the court.

After being declared elected governor, Douglas Ruas attended an evangelical event celebrating the centenary of the Assembly of God of Madureira, held at Maracanãzinho in North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Ruas expressed his joy at participating in the celebration in a packed venue.

The recount of the votes and the declaration of Douglas Ruas' victory mark an important step in the electoral process of the state, reflecting the TSE's decision regarding the annulled votes.
