UN General Assembly: Macron and Trump Present Opposing Visions
The speeches by Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly highlight two contrasting approaches to international relations.

At the United Nations General Assembly, Emmanuel Macron condemned what he calls the "law of the jungle," urging to "stand tall alongside the United Nations." This statement positions the French president against those who seek to undermine the global organization, thus defending multilateralism and international law.
On the other hand, Donald Trump expressed his dilemma concerning Iran, stating he must choose between "annihilating" the country or making a "deal." This intervention followed his earlier demands for reforms regarding the UN and the suspension of its funding, which he also mentioned at the beginning of his speech.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned about the situation in the occupied West Bank, referring to the "specter of ethnic cleansing." Guterres emphasized the importance of respecting international law and advocated for safeguarding the two-state solution in response to the current crisis.

Macron also addressed the situation in Gaza, lamenting a "so-called peace" that has failed to reopen humanitarian pathways. His statement drew criticism, particularly from the Israeli Prime Minister, in light of his approach to the crisis.
The speeches revealed a stark contrast in the approaches of the two leaders. While Macron advocates for a collaborative vision through the UN, Trump focuses on threats and binary choices concerning foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran.
The meeting was also marked by a speech perceived by some as electoral in nature from Trump, as he seeks to bolster his image ahead of the midterms in November. The Belgian Foreign Minister denounced this tendency in the address, considering it does not reflect Belgian values.
