West Bengal Revokes Banga Bibhushan Award from BJP MP Ananta Maharaj

The West Bengal government has revoked the Banga Bibhushan award that was granted to BJP MP Ananta Maharaj. This decision was prompted by his recent remarks, which were perceived as disrespectful towards Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his leadership of the Azad Hind Fauj.

Ananta Maharaj had questioned the legacy of Bose, leading to significant backlash from various political factions and groups in the state. The comments were deemed controversial and inappropriate by many who hold Bose in high esteem as a freedom fighter.

Reports indicate that the government's decision to rescind the award came shortly after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari warned of strict action against statements derogatory to the iconic figure of Netaji.

Previously, the award had been conferred during the administration of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in February, prior to the current government's term. The revocation reflects the ongoing sensitivity around historical figures in West Bengal.
