Christine Lagarde announces departure from ECB for February 7
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, has announced her resignation effective February 7, 2027, ending her term early.

Christine Lagarde, the current President of the European Central Bank (ECB), announced that she will leave her position on February 7, 2027. The decision was confirmed in a statement released on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Lagarde's term was set to extend until the end of October 2027. However, her departure had been the subject of speculation in recent months, especially in a complicated context for Europe and the institution itself.
The ECB Council, as well as the President of the European Council, António Costa, have already been notified of her resignation. Lagarde will leave her position at a time when the central bank's interest rates remain unchanged, as announced during a recent statement.

In her justification, Christine Lagarde stated that her decision to resign is related to her desire to intervene freely and
defend the truth.
