The government has decided to privatize 49.9% of TAP, selecting Lufthansa as the new partner. This decision was announced after a lengthy process that lasted approximately 17 months since its initiation.

The agreement entails that Lufthansa will pay €1.201 billion for a stake of up to 49.9% in the Portuguese airline. This sale includes 44.9% allocated to an investor and 5% reserved for the employees.

The official announcement of Lufthansa's selection was made during a Cabinet meeting scheduled for the 4th. The decision has been widely anticipated, as the privatization process for TAP has been dragging on for several months.

TAP, which has faced financial difficulties in recent years, aims to strengthen its position in the European market and ensure its long-term sustainability through this privatization.

So far, Lufthansa has been the only company mentioned as a concrete purchase possibility, in light of speculations about other potential investors, such as Air France-KLM, which have not yet been confirmed as direct competitors in this final stage of the process.

The completion of the TAP privatization operation is expected to occur by early 2028, allowing considerable time for the transition and implementation of the necessary management changes. More details about the next steps and how the new partnership will shape TAP's future are anticipated soon.
