The Lisbon City Council (CML) has announced plans to suspend the shared scooter system in the city. The decision is justified by concerns related to safety and the occupation of public spaces, highlighting issues surrounding the operation of scooters in the capital.

The president of the council, Carlos Moedas, emphasized that the current system is not functioning as expected. In a video shared on social media platform X, Moedas stated that the situation requires a new approach to ensure the safety of citizens and the proper use of urban space.

The proposal to suspend the scooters will be discussed in a meeting of the City Council, where the decision is expected to be formalized. This step aligns with actions taken in other Portuguese cities, such as Braga, Espinho, and Vila Nova de Gaia, which have adopted similar measures.

In addition to the scooter proposal, the CML confirmed that the bike-sharing system, known as Gira, will continue to operate and will even be reinforced in the city. The aim is to promote a sustainable and safe mobility alternative.

The concerns raised by Carlos Moedas regarding scooters include claims of safety incidents and complaints about the misuse of public spaces, which have generated dissatisfaction among residents and visitors of Lisbon. The municipal administration is attentive to these issues and is striving to find solutions.

With the proposal set to be voted on in the next council meeting, there is anticipation that the suspension will become official in the near future. This decision marks the beginning of a new chapter in urban mobility policy in Lisbon, as the city seeks to enhance the safety and efficiency of its transportation systems.
