Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced on Friday a ban on sports betting and online casinos, less than ten days before the presidential elections. This measure was published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette and will take effect immediately, although betting sites will have until October 6 to cease operations.

Lula's decision is based on concerns about the growing issue of indebtedness among the population, which has been exacerbated by the proliferation of online betting. In a speech, the president stated that this type of gambling is a 'tumor' in Brazilian society. The move has reportedly garnered popular support, according to some polls.

As the government proceeds with this ban, it is expected that betting associations and sports clubs, which partially rely on their revenues, will express their opposition. Many of these organizations believe that the measure directly affects their funding. The ban will need to be ratified by Congress within 120 days to remain valid.

Additionally, a period has been established for bettors to withdraw their funds from betting sites. The announcement comes in an electoral context where Lula aims to secure support from voters concerned about the social impact of gambling.

The ban has generated tensions in the political atmosphere and among those funding sports in Brazil. Lula faces criticism from opponents who accuse him of politicizing the measure at a critical moment in the electoral campaign, as polls show a tight race among candidates.

The previous deregulation of the sector, which allowed online betting sites to operate for years, is a topic that has sparked debate in the country. Following this drastic action, Lula aims to address the concerns of an electorate increasingly skeptical about the gaming industry.
