Punjab Government Protests Appointment of Ashwani Kumar Mishra as Chief Justice
The Punjab cabinet has formally objected to the appointment of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, citing a lack of state consent.

The Punjab state cabinet has voiced its objection to the appointment of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. An official statement issued following the cabinet meeting indicated the resolution to request the Central Government to postpone the oath ceremony until Punjab’s views are appropriately considered.
This decision arises from the cabinet's concern that the appointment was made without obtaining consent from the state government. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that this action was a violation of constitutional norms and procedures, asserting that the central government acted too hastily in this regard.
Chief Minister Mann described the appointment as an 'assault on Punjab's rights.' The cabinet's objection highlights tensions between state and central authorities regarding judicial appointments.

Reports indicate that Ashwani Kumar Mishra was sworn in as Chief Justice despite the state government’s opposition. Notably, Chief Minister Mann did not attend the oath-taking ceremony, reflecting the cabinet's discontent with the process.
Prior to his appointment at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Mishra served at the Allahabad High Court for approximately 11 years, bringing extensive experience to his new role.
