António José Seguro, President of the Republic, participated this Friday in the plenary session of the 21st meeting of the Arraiolos Group, held in Slovenia. During his speech, he warned that a Europe where many young people cannot access housing risks losing the trust of future generations.

Seguro highlighted the importance of translating efforts into tangible results for young people and suggested that the European Union should reconsider the unanimity rule in crucial areas such as defense and energy. Revising this rule could enable quicker and more effective decision-making within the Union.

The head of state specified that to maintain a connection with younger citizens, deeper political integration and European autonomy in defense matters are necessary. These changes, according to Seguro, are essential to ensure Europe's relevance in the future.

During the meeting, the conditions currently faced by young people in various areas were discussed, with housing being identified as one of the main challenges. The President called for Europe to proactively address these issues in order to maintain citizens' trust.

In addition to the housing issue, other matters related to the integration of the European Union and autonomy in various policies were addressed. The importance of more agile decision-making underscores the need for a Europe that operates cohesively and effectively to tackle contemporary challenges.

The discussion took place against the backdrop of growing concerns about the transparency and accessibility of European institutions for young people, who increasingly feel disconnected from the decisions that impact their lives.
