CP – Comboios de Portugal has announced that it will invite the French company Alstom and the Spanish company Talgo to submit proposals for the supply and maintenance of high-speed trains intended for passenger service. This invitation comes after a pre-qualification phase of the tender.

The tender for the supply of the trains has a fixed starting price of 504 million euros. The selected companies will now begin the process of submitting their bids.

According to information released, Alstom and Talgo are competing to supply 12 railcars to CP. The contract is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2027, with the first delivery scheduled for 2031.

Several media outlets, including RTP and Observador, reported that Alstom and Talgo were chosen based on a technical evaluation conducted by CP. No additional details about the selection criteria were disclosed at this stage of the tender.

Representatives from Alstom expressed interest in demonstrating that the company can offer a differentiated solution compared to its competitors, particularly with respect to Renfe, the Spanish operator that will enter the Portuguese market with Talgo technology, as reported by Público.

The ongoing process is part of a broader initiative by CP to modernize and expand its fleet of trains, thereby increasing the efficiency and quality of rail service in Portugal.
