The Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) approved the base text of the Public Security Amendment Proposal (PEC) on Wednesday (2). The vote was symbolic, with votes not being counted nominally, and followed a six-month delay.

Despite the approval of the base text, the CCJ did not finalize the analysis of three separate sections known as highlights. As a result, the proposal will not be voted on in the Senate plenary on this date.

The rapporteur of the PEC, Senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), emphasized that the recent crisis involving messages between Supreme Federal Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes and former banker Daniel Vorcaro did not impact the voting process.

The proposal aims to strengthen the fight against organized crime and improve the tools available to confront criminal factions. Additionally, constitutional modifications related to public security are included in the text.

The President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), had cleared the proposal for voting, indicating a rapprochement with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in recent weeks, which facilitated deliberation in the committee.

The topic of the Public Security PEC is considered a priority by the Palácio do Planalto, reflecting the government's intention to address public security issues amid parliamentary debates.
