Wes Streeting Reports Increase in Homophobic Abuse as Defence Secretary
Wes Streeting has highlighted the significant homophobic abuse he has received since taking on the role of defence secretary.

Wes Streeting, the current defence secretary, has reported an overwhelming amount of homophobic abuse directed towards him since his appointment last month. He expressed that this abuse underscores persistent stereotypes regarding LGBTQ+ individuals within certain online communities.
Streeting remarked that his new role presents an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and challenge these stereotypes. He noted that some within the Ministry of Defence (MoD) have welcomed his appointment as indicative of progress and change within the military establishment.
Historically, the UK military imposed a ban on gay men and lesbian women serving until the year 2000, resulting in the discharge of over 200 personnel annually due to their sexual orientation during that period.

The decriminalization of homosexuality in the UK occurred in 1967, yet the ban in the armed forces remained in place for over three decades, indicating a long-standing stigma against LGBTQ+ individuals in military service.
Streeting indicated that the level of homophobic sentiments displayed by certain individuals reflects a difficulty some may have in accepting a gay person in a leadership position within the armed forces.
His comments come at a time when conversations regarding diversity and inclusion in the military continue to gain traction, amidst both societal shifts and ongoing challenges.
